Summary of Nominee Profile
Andrew is the Principal Researcher and Director of PEMANGKIN Research, where he leads research, training, and advocacy initiatives in collaboration with local CSOs to promote sustainable development in Sabah and Sarawak.
In addition to his leadership at PEMANGKIN, Andrew serves as the Deputy President of PELIHARA (Persatuan Pemeliharaan dan Pemuliharaan Alam Sekitar Sarawak). Based in Miri, his work focuses on forest conservation, social forestry policy, and supporting Indigenous livelihoods through partnerships with the NTFP-EP Malaysia. His expertise in this area is further recognized through his position on the Board of Trustees for NTFP-EP Asia (2023–2026).
A key voice in sustainable industry standards, Andrew currently serves as the Social NGO Representative on the RSPO Standards Standing Committee. He was a member of the 2024 Principles & Criteria Review Task Force and contributed to the 2025 Malaysia National Interpretation (MyNI) Task Force. His previous academic career includes serving as an Associate Professor at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) and holding high-level advisory roles for the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education.
Andrew holds a PhD from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE).
Summary of Organisation
Pemangkin Research is a non-profit social enterprise based in Kuching, Malaysia. We undertake research, training, and advocacy work to strengthen and empower civil society organisations and indigenous local communities (IPLCs) in Sabah and Sarawak. Our vision is a knowledgeable and democratic society that respects human rights, cares for the environment and promotes sustainable economic development. Our mission is to raise civic awareness and technical expertise among civil society activists, policymakers and IPLCs. Our strengths are in the area of civic education and participation, sustainability, food security and rural community development.
